Hacking Team: At the European Parliament for the hack
The Hacking TEAM scandal continues. Marietje Schaake from the Netherlands, and member of the European Parliament, has filed a request with the European Commission (EC) for further investigation into the case.
Schaake asked the European Parliament to decide whether Hacking TEAM violated various embargo regulations by selling its products to repressive regimes (Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan).european parliament brussels Hacking Team Hacking Team
Schaake even singled out the sale of software to Sudan as a possible violation of “United Nations Security Council resolutions 1556, 1591, 1945, 2091 and 2138”, and that the sale “also violates Council Decision 2014/450/CFSP of 10 July 2014 concerning restrictive measures in view of the situation in Sudan”.
Her questions for the European Commission, published here, are as follows:
1) Does the Commission consider that Hacking Team has violated the EU sanctions regime?
2) Has the Commission been informed of any prior authorisation given by the Italian authorities allowing Hacking Team to export its products to Sudan or Russia, and is it aware of a ‘general authorisation’ given by the Italian authorities authorising the company to freely export its products to all Wassenaar Arrangement countries?
3) Has Hacking Team ever asked DG FPI any questions regarding the interpretation of the EU sanctions regime against Sudan or Russia?
These questions open up several problems for the Italian team, which apparently constantly the law.
