The system is expected to contribute to strengthening the Greek scientific community, meeting the needs of Greek researchers and facilitating their access to the pan-European network of corresponding systems.

Starting next month, researchers from all universities, technical institutes and research centers in Greece will have access to a supercomputer through a new generation nationwide optical network. The capabilities of the new system will be used to support large-scale scientific and technological applications.

As announced by the Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs, at the initiative of the Research and Innovation Sector, the installation of the national high-performance computing system (High Performance Computer-HPC) is being completed in its central building in Maroussi, with the assistance of the National Research and Technology Network (NRTN).

The Hellenic National Network (GNNET), with its expertise, will ensure the smooth operation of the infrastructure and provide systematic support to users. The new infrastructure will be integrated into the European supercomputer 'ecosystem', aspiring to be included in the 300 most powerful computers in the world and to strengthen Greece's participation in the pan-European PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe) infrastructure.

The system is expected to contribute to strengthening the Greek scientific community, meeting the needs of Greek researchers and facilitating their access to the pan-European PRACE infrastructure.

Computational Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Biomedicine, Meteorology, Seismology, Computer Engineering, Materials Sciences and Social Sciences are some of the scientific fields that can utilize the supercomputer.

The new system has a computing power of 180 TFlops (trillion floating-point operations per second). It has 426 computing nodes and over 8,500 CPU cores interconnected in a network. The system will also feature modern software tools for application development, such as compilers, scientific libraries and scientific application suites.

Deputy Minister of Research and Innovation Costas Fotakis expressed his satisfaction because "the Greek research and academic community is finally acquiring a modern supercomputer infrastructure"
