Next Thing: Here is the cheapest… chip pc! for 10 euros.
California-based Next Thing is seeking funding to bring market a miniature computer
The company hopes that the micro-PC, called Chip, will be ready to be released on the market within the next year.
The secret behind the Chip's incredibly low price has to do with both the company's business plan and the cost of components. In order to reduce the price of the device, the company chose an ARM-based processor from Allwinner, which makes low-cost chips for smartphones and tablets.
Specifically, the Chip will integrate an Allwinner R8 Cortex A8 processor at 1GHz with Mali-400 graphics, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. It will also include wireless technologies 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.
To keep the cost of the Chip down, the company has omitted some features that would be expected in such a device. has one USB port, a microUSB port for power, and support for a camera sensor. The device is equipped with a composite connection for video playback, but adapters for HDMI and VGA are available.
Next Thing also plans to release a portable version of the Chip, the Pocket Chip, which is expected to cost around €44. This gadget will feature a 4.3-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 470×2723, a keyboard and a 3,000 mAH battery.
