Russia and China are putting their relations on even stronger footing by signing a cybersecurity pact. According to The Wall Street Journal, the two countries promise not to launch cyberattacks against each other, while agreeing to exchange new technologies and information on threats.
Furthermore, the two heads of state promised to support each other and to counter any technology that may destabilize the political and socio-economic situation and that may interfere in the internal affairs of the two states.
The two countries have had close relations since the end of the Cold War, but Russia has increasingly turned to the East after military interventions in Ukraine, which have negatively affected its relations with Europe and the United States.
The WSJ reports that the agreement between Moscow and Beijing favors a shift in the balance of global internet governance and reduces the important role traditionally played by the United States. Both countries have as a principle that the government should have greater control over the internet and the information their citizens receive from the internet.
