About a year ago (April 2014) the closure of the encrypted email service Lavabit was announced, and the announcement of a new one, Lavaboom.
You might remember the Lavabit adventure. If you're not one to withhold facts, then let's recall that the company was shut down under pressure from the NSA to hand over its encryption keys.

For the record, Lavabit was a secure email service that Edward Snowden supposedly used. After its shutdown, there were publications calling for it to partner with Silent Circle to create a new secure email service.
LaνaBoom encrypts user data on the client side and sends encrypted emails by default.
Development of LaνaBoom began in 2013 and testing began in April 2014.
During testing, the developers discovered that something was wrong with the encryption, so they wrote all of LaνaBoom's code from scratch.
The good news is that the official Beta testing of LaνaBoom has begun and that the company seems to have started distributing new e-mails with invitations.
But let's see what the new service offers.
First of all, it is a new company based in Germany and, as it states, aims to provide a secure email service. Unlike Lavabit, which was a paid service, LavaBoom offers a free 1GB mailbox (for now), protected with draconian security measures.
The service is still in beta, which means that in the future we may see things change, such as providing additional storage space for those who wish to do so, for a fee of course.
