Blogging platform Tumblr, which is owned by Yahoo Inc, has added new search terms, such as torrent, to its network's filter list.
Tumblr has maintained a filter list for some time to block adult search terms related to pornographic content from appearing in search results, globally.
All users, regardless of whether they are logged in or not, can search on the main Tumblr website. List filters block some results from appearing to all visitors and blog users who have not disabled the NSFW filter in their account settings.
While some users may still find filtered blogs in search results (if they don't disable the filter), visitors and users who don't know about the filter will not be affected at all.
It's still unclear why the term torrent has been flagged by Tumblr. Some say it's because it's often associated with adult blogs, while others speculate it has to do with a recent change in privacy policy regarding copyright infringement.
Regardless of the reason, it is clear that filtering also affects areas that do not offer adult or content that violates copyright law.
If you have used Tumblr in the past to find torrent but can no longer, due to the change and because you don't want to create an account on the site to be allowed and the filtered results, you still have the ability to find torrent files on related sites on Tumblr.
The easiest option right now is to use a search engine like StartPage. Several of the sites have not been set as “noindex” yet, which means that search engines still have them in their databases.
You can also use the expression site:tumblr.com torrents, for example, to find pages on the site that match your search. Depending on the search engine, you may need to disable the safe browsing filter before all results appear.
