Social network and microblogging Tumblr announced on Thursday that its users can now pay to remove ad interruptions when browsing blogs and posts. Those who choose to pay for the subscription will not see ads when browsing Tumblr on either a computer or the mobile app.

Specifically, it was announced by Tumblr Staffthat users can pay a monthly subscription of $4.99 or an annual subscription of $39.99 (a 33% discount) to remove ads from the platform. Of course, the feature is optional, and users who don't want to pay will be able to continue using Tumblr for free with ads. But for those who decide to pay the subscription, they are given the opportunity to enjoy Tumblr as it was before Yahoo bought the platform in 2013 and before Verizon sold Tumblr to WordPress owner Automattic Inc. for a small percentage of its original value.
The Verge reports that Tumblr founder David Karp was always against running ads on his platform. However, after selling the company in 2013, the founder decided to introduce ads as a way to generate revenue. Since then, the platform has been plagued by annoying ads that seem to flood the feed and often make no sense.

While the announcement shows that Tumblr is still committed to supporting its users, it may be too late now, as the social network has already lost quite a few users after blocking adult content on the platform.
