Google Vice President Dr Vinton Cerf Warns… Print Your Photos If You Don't Want to See Them Lost Forever
He may have helped create the internet, but he doesn't hesitate to talk about the "dangers" that accompany technological developments.
Dr Vinton 'Vint' Cerf is warning internet users to print out their favorite photos, if they don't want to one day see them "lost" once and for all.
According to a report by MailOnline, the Google vice president warns that as operating systems and software evolve more and more, it will become even more difficult to access documents and images stored with older technology.
He also mentioned that our dependence on technology could "mute" the 21stcentury into a new "dark age" in history, with any elements of our culture being lost in a digital "black hole."
In the centuries to come, future historians studying our era are very likely to find themselves faced with a digital “desert,” comparable to the post-Roman period in Western Europe, about which relatively little is known, due to the scarcity of written records.
Dr Cerf, who holds the title of “Chief Internet Evangelist” at Google, also said: “If we think 1,000, 3,000 years ahead, we have to ask ourselves how we will be able to preserve all the bits that we need to correctly interpret the digital objects that we use? At the moment, without realizing it, we are carelessly throwing all our data into what could become an information black hole. In the next century and the ones that follow, there will be great difficulty in interpreting the bits that we have left behind.”.
As the same publication notes, speaking at the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Jose, California, he urged internet users to print their favorite photos and not simply rely on storing them in memory files.
