Technology that turns our bodies into a power source for wearables

wearable gadgets

Scientists from all over the world are trying to build the right technology that will power wearable gadgets from our own bodies.

This is what the team from the International University of Singapore is trying to achieve by creating a tiny flexible device that can convert static electricity into energy . One surface of the device rests on the skin while the other, which has a gold casing, is covered in silicone. Between these two surfaces are tiny pillars of silicone.

The thinner the pillars, the greater the efficiency, as they allow a larger surface area to come into contact with the skin. The results of the device, as well as how much electricity it can generate, were presented by the team from the International University of Singapore at the International Conference on Micro-Electrical Systems (IEEE MEMS) 2015, which took place last week.

By inserting the device into the forearm and neck, it was found that simply shaking the hand and speaking, yields from 7.3 to 7.5 volts respectively. Touching with just one finger produces 90 volts, or enough energy to power several LED bulbs.
