For the 22nd consecutive year, IBM has once again topped the list of companies with the most patents in the US. Specifically, the company registered 7,534 patents in 2014, more than any other company.
In addition, 37% of these patents came from IBM working at the company's facilities outside the US, which demonstrates, according to IBM, the diversity of its research activities.
IBM maintains 12 research labs on six continents. The two newest are in Sao Paulo, Brazil , and Nairobi, Kenya. However, what the company sees as an advantage is criticized by many in the United States, as IBM is accused of taking jobs away from the American technology market with this tactic.
As in previous years, IBM has focused on developing proprietary technologies in areas where it sees the greatest opportunity. So, there has been a lot of work recently in the areas of cloud computing, analytics, mobility, social networking, and security.
