New virus threatens Apple computers – For the first time in the company's history, an automatic security update for its operating systems is being urgently sent.
Apple sent out an automatic security update for the first time in its history, following warnings from the Department of Homeland Security and the Software Engineering Institute about a powerful virus targeting its operating systems.
In the past, Mac security updates required the consent of their users.
The company attributed the hasty change in its policy to the severity of the threat.
" We decided that our customers needed to be protected immediately . Besides, the upgrade is so seamless that it doesn't even require a reboot," company spokesman Bill Evans told Reuters
According to the developers, the virus targets a logarithmic weakness in the Network Time Protocol (NTP) of OSX operating systems.
So far, however, Apple claims that no successful e-mail attack has been reported through the NTP kernel that it supposedly just locked.
