A German association supported by the city –and the federated state– of Berlin presented today an app for smartphones «against the Nazis».
"Every user of the application will receive, if they wish, automatic updates on any activity of neo-Nazi organizations in Berlin," Bianca Klose, director of the Berlin-based Association for Democratic Culture (VdK), explained to AFP.
The user "will be able to decide whether to participate in actions against these extremist movements, that is, to participate in demonstrations against them, which will be announced mainly through the application , or, for example, to hang a banner from their window," she added.
The organization VdK piloted this program with members of the group «Berlin against the Nazis» (Berlin gegen Nazis), which was founded in March 2014 in order to mobilize civil society against the extremist Right.
The application, called "Gegen Nazis" (Against Nazis), can be installed for free on Android phones and iPhones and is available in three languages: German, English and Turkish. It operates on the basis of an interactive map of Berlin where demonstrations by far-right organizations and all demonstrations organized against them are recorded in real time.
Dilék Kolát, who is responsible for the portfolios of Labor, Integration and Women in the state government, expressed her support for this initiative.
“Berlin is an open and tolerant city. The app aims to accompany Berliners in their commitment against racism, anti-Semitism and extremism» she emphasized in a press release.
