This robot can play Ping-Pong without help

The Japanese have always been fascinated by robots and have an entire subculture centered around them. Humanoid machines are just a small part of that.

The robot shown below is beyond humanoids, and beyond what they can do. Some might say it's not even a robot.

However, it still remains an automated, or at least partially automated, piece of machinery that can move independently (to the extent that its base remains in the same place) and respond to the environment.

Or, rather, to respond to something very specific: a ping-pong ball. Because that's what the robot: play ping-pong.

The Japanese company Omron that created the robot, while admitting that it lacks professional-level skills, claims that it still plays quite well with random people.

In terms of specifications, the robot is 2.7m tall, three feet long and weighs 600kg, costing £1323. It uses motion detection technology to track the ball. This trajectory is calculated based on the position of the ball, the position of the net and the position of the human opponent.
