You may think that hiding the keypad while typing your PIN will protect you, but thieves have technology on their side. Here are some new tricks they're using and how to protect yourself.
On the Creativity Design Science channel, Mark Robert explains that every movement we make has a thermal footprint. Essentially, wherever we touch, our thermal footprint is left behind for a few bucks.
With a special thermal camera addition to smartphones, thieves can see which keys you pressed at the ATM, even in what order, by noting which numbers have the most recent and most intense thermal imprint.
In order to "spoil their work," Robert suggests touching your fingers to all the ATM buttons even if you don't press them, so that the thermal imprint is the same on all of them, thus rendering their method useless.
