Fraunhofer IIS (Institute for Integrated Circuits- Germany) has adapted the SHORE facial recognition/analysis software for use on Google Glass, creating – according to an announcement from the institute – the first application of its kind.
With the help of Glass's built-in camera, the application detects/detects the faces of people around it and "determines" their emotions by analyzing their expressions.
As highlighted, all calculations are performed in real time by the system's CPU, while the image data never leaves the device.
“The new development from Fraunhofer IIS is the world's first emotion recognition software that works in real time with Google Glass.
"This opens up a whole new range of new smart eyewear applications, including communication aids for people with disorders such as autism, many of whom have trouble interpreting emotions through facial expressions," the institute's announcement states.
The information could be projected into the user's field of vision, while for people with visual impairments there could be further assistance with audio information about the people in their environment.
Also, by taking advantage of the ability to identify gender and calculate age, the software could be used in other applications, such as interactive games or market analysis.
The SHORE program is the fruit of years of research and development in the field of "smart" systems. As the institute emphasizes, the software allows for object and face detection, as well as detailed expression analysis - while it is possible to adapt it to data from almost any platform and operating system, especially on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.
