Cybercriminals are exploiting the upcoming release of the Windows 9 preview version in an attempt to scam unsuspecting internet users.
According to Trend Micro researcher Gideon Hernandez, there are several malicious websites claiming to provide access to a copy of the upcoming Windows 9 that has been leaked online ,redirecting users to various software installation sites.
The criminals likely receive a certain amount of money for each installation that occurs, as part of an affiliate marketing program.
However, Trend Micro has identified other variations of this particular scam, and in its most aggressive form, victims are infected with adware, which can be funneled into other files, executable or not, while also posing the risk of installing infostealers or trojans.
Finally, experts warn of another variant of the scam, which takes advantage of the long-awaited release of Windows 9 by leading users to phishing, with the aim of intercepting their phone numbers.
