What you don't know about the life of Sir John Ive
After Steve Jobs, no one had more influence at Apple than Jonathan Ive, the company's vice president of design.
Ive had already worked at Apple for 22 years and in that time had won countless awards and praise for his inventiveness and consistency in the minimalist aesthetic of the company's products.
And all of this "gave" him an incredible fortune.
Below are some facts about Sir John Ive's life that you may not have known, as presented in a relevant Business Insider tribute:
Jonathan Ive was born on February 27, 1967, in the London suburb of Chingford. His father was a silversmith, and from a young age Ive let his imagination run wild in his father's workshop.
Ive studied industrial design at Newcastle Polytechnic, now known as Northumbria University.
Some of his designs, while he was still a student, were exhibited at the London Design Museum.
One of his first designs was an electronic pen, which could write in different widths and shapes.
His first design for Apple was the Lindy MessagePad. Ive's favorite feature was the rotating cover, which was a precursor to the flip phones that followed.
Ive started working at Apple in 1992. When Steve Jobs returned to the company in 1997, he became vice president of design.
The most important assignment Jobs gave him was the iMac.
Today, Ive lives in San Francisco, from where he commutes to work at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.
In 2012, he bought a four-bedroom house in Pacific Heights—the billionaire neighborhood—for $17 million. The house was designed by Willis Polk, a very famous San Francisco architect.
In addition to his expensive home, Ive has a special love for good cars.
When he was young he had helped his father repair an Austin-Healey Sprite. He himself owned an Aston Martin DB9, but crashed it.
So he bought a second one, but it was the wrong color. When he complained to the company about the mistake, they gave him a very good deal on the Vanquish supercar.
Ive's next purchase was a white Bentley Brooklands. He liked the car so much that he bought another one in black, and he also owns a Land Rover LR3.
In May 2012, Ive was knighted at Buckingham Palace by Princess Anne, the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth.
Among his good friends are Bono of U2 and designer Marc Newson.
Ive also has very good relations with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, and was invited to a dinner in honor of the British Prime Minister at the White House in 2012.
