Your timeline is probably flooded with cats , with their proud owners posting adorable photos of them. You might be one of them! But have you ever wondered if your photo of your cute pet says more than it should? That it could be revealing your exact location ?
Owen Mundy , an associate professor at Florida State University , created the project “ I know where your cat lives ” about a week ago . To implement the project, Owen selected a million photos of cats that were available to the general public, through photo banks sites, such as Flickr and Instagram , among others. He then “placed” the photos on a world map using the geographical information embedded in their metadata.
By visiting the “I know where your cat lives” project page, you will find the addresses of 4,831 cats in Greece ! The most cats, 1,647 to be exact, seem to be… meowing in Athens , followed by the co-capital , with 482 cats!
Recently, Owen and his team launched a campaign on Kickstarter to boost the project but also to show that despite the fun side of the subject , there is also the issue of ensuring privacy , as any photo we post can " leak " our personal information .
