Football and Facebook brought them together
For those who were lucky enough to be in one of the stadiums in Brazil and watch the "celebration of football" up close, the World Cup continues... through the friendships they made there!
According to information obtained by Time magazine from Facebook, fans who were in the stadiums of Rio de Janeiro and beyond, made at least two new "online friends."
Every visitor who passed through the gates of a stadium in the last month made an average of one Brazilian and one other from another country their Facebook friend.
The leaders in "friendships" seem to be Americans, who created the most "online ties" with Brazilians during the World Cup, as well as with citizens of the United Kingdom, Australia, Mexico, Colombia and Canada.
Travelers from Australia, Argentina, Mexico and the UK, who were in Brazil to watch the 2014 World Cup matches, are among the five countries that created the most new Facebook friendships with Brazilians.
An estimated 3.7 million people traveled throughout Brazil during the World Cup, and before entering the stadium, they made sure to check in on Facebook over 1 million times.
Arrival check-ins reached their peak on the first day of the tournament, when Brazil beat Croatia 3-1, while the same happened on the day of the grand final, which saw Germany celebrate winning the title of world champion.
On the day of the final between Germany and Argentina, 236,000 check-ins were recorded at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
