Someone just bought a lot of bitcoins.
Last week, the U.S. Marshals Service auctioned off 29,656.5 bitcoins seized from Silk Road, the illegal drug trafficking website that federal agents shut down last fall. The auction house says the total value of the bitcoins was about $19 million, which went to a lucky winner. Lynzey Donahue, a spokeswoman for the agency, confirmed that all of the seized bitcoins went to a single bidder, but she would not reveal his name or the amount he paid.
The calculation of the amount was based on the market value of bitcoins, which is approximately $640.
