The mobile phone conspiracy – How at risk are its 4 billion users?

braincellphone

Over 4,000,000,000 mobile phone users worldwide participate as “lab animals” in the biggest experiment in human history: The frequent exposure to non-ionizing radiation.

An international scientific committee, with a 600-page document based on 2,000 scientific studies, demonstrates the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation on humans (altering the…brain cells), even at low emission levels. The danger is huge for children…

I quote an article by Giannis Elafrou in the newspaper Kathimerini (03/01/08)

“A clear danger signal is being emitted by the scientific community regarding the possible harmful health effects of mobile phone use as well as other sources of non‑ionizing radiation. And simultaneously, an urgent appeal to governments and international organisations to proceed with a drastic reduction of radiation emission limits is being made by distinguished scientists and independent researchers from many countries. At the same time, over two billion mobile phone users worldwide (about 3.3 billion active devices – in Greece exceeding 15 million connections), participate as “lab rats” in the largest experiment in human history.

Deep sense was caused by the 2007 Report of the BioInitiative Working Group, a scientific committee composed of distinguished scientists from the USA, the European Environment Agency, Britain, Sweden, Austria and China. In a detailed 600-page document scientific documentation is provided, based on more than 2,000 scientific studies ’ around the world, for the fact “that there are negative consequences to human health from exposure to electromagnetic radiation, even when it is hundreds or thousands of times below the official limits of Europe and the USA”.

“It is not known everything about the effects of mobile phones and, more generally, non‑ionizing radiation”, emphasizes the BioInitiative Report. “What is clear is that today’s public health protection limits are thousands of times more lenient than necessary. Changes are required”.

“We do not consider the current Acceptable Exposure Limits safe, which are established mainly based on economic-political motives and not as they should be according to scientific criteria of recent research”, emphasizes in “K” Mr. Loukas Margaritis, Professor of Biology at the University of Athens, who has conducted research showing serious biological effects of mobile phones on insects.

The limits set by Greece in 2006 for mobile phone antenna emissions are slightly stricter than those of the World Health Organization, but “are above the strictest limits that apply in other countries, such as, for example, our neighboring Italy and Russia, where since the Soviet Union era they have promptly studied the non‑thermal effects of radiation. We appeal for a reduction of the limits to the levels of Salzburg (0,2 V/m – volts per meter). Today, one country after another is lowering the limits. Belgium decided in February 2007 to immediately set a limit of 3 V/m, aiming for 0,6 V/m”.

The effects of mobile devices are divided into thermal and non-thermal impacts. The latter, previously unexplained, are increasingly being revealed by a series of scientific studies that demonstrate the potential for alteration of normal cellular function, mutations, genome fragmentation, and even breach of the blood-brain barrier, which prevents unwanted blood substances from entering the brain.

“Radiations, with the electromagnetic fields they create, convert certain important chemical molecules of cells such as amino acids (essential structural components of proteins) into small magnets and also affect the cellular flow of others (e.g., ions). Thus the proper functioning of proteins that are responsible for almost all physiological functions of cells is altered,”, notes Professor Georgiou. “The overall metabolism of cells changes, resulting, for example, in some highly toxic free oxygen radicals not being neutralized and oxidative stress occurring, which causes damage to DNA and other important chemical molecules of cells.”.

What we do not yet know exactly is how this harmful effect occurs and what the relationship is between the amount of radiation and the consequences it causes.

In this direction, an ambitious research program that the biochemistry laboratory of Mr. Georgiou at the University of Patras is launching will contribute.

“We want to “capture” the extremely toxic free radical of superoxide, a fleeting molecule that lives for a millionth of a second and is the primary factor in creating oxidative pressure, to see if and how much its concentrations increase due to electromagnetic radiation”, says to “K” Mr. Georgiou.

“Furthermore, we will measure the damage to DNA, because although they have been qualitatively documented they have not been quantified, so that a correlation with emission levels can be made”.

Tips for users

* We reduce mobile phone usage as much as possible. No conversations longer than one minute.

* We always use hands free or bluetooth in our conversations. Even then, however, the mobile phone should not be in contact with the body. It should be at least 40 centimeters away from our body. As this is not always possible, special cases have been designed, one in particular by the Department of Cell Biology of the University of Athens (https://kyttariki.biol.uoa.gr )

* If we don't have hands free or bluetooth on us we don't “stick” the device to our ear, we switch sides and use the speaker that many phones have.

* We minimize mobile phone use inside the car unless we have a special antenna because we receive radiation from every point of the body. An alternative solution is conversation with hands free or bluetooth, but placing the phone in a special position that “looks” outward, directing the radiation outside the vehicle.

* We avoid using the phone in basements, closed spaces, elevators and generally where the signal is extremely weak. In this case our phone transmits at maximum power. The same can happen in open outdoor spaces, where the base antenna is very far away or does not have a good line of sight. From’ this perspective we are very careful in using the phone inside homes (especially in interior rooms).

At the end of December, the International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety (www.icems.eu) conference was organized in Venice, on the topic “Fundamentals of Bioelectromagnetics: Towards a New Logic in Risk Assessment”. What does this new logic consist of? Mr. Christos Georgiou, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Patras, who participated in the conference, tells “K” “that until now official organizations and of course companies accept that non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation only has thermal effects on the body. The limits were set exclusively on the basis of these. But there are also non-thermal, biological effects. In the presence of more than a hundred independent scientists, the BioInitiative Report was characterized as a shock report, which forces a new approach”.

According to researchers, around the modern human a “electromagnetic cloud” is formed by non‑ionizing electromagnetic radiation, originating from many sources: mobile phones and wireless phones, wireless networks, telephone and television station antennas, microwave ovens, high‑voltage towers, electrical devices.

More and more often, electromagnetic pollution is linked to a series of negative effects. From the more “simple” (fatigue, drowsiness, inability to concentrate, memory reduction, headaches, etc.), to the more severe: mutations of human cell function, DNA breakage, reduced sperm count, Alzheimer’s, seizures, acoustic neuroma (a benign tumor that reduces hearing), brain cancer, breast cancer, childhood leukemia.

Dr. Lennart Hardell, a professor at the University Hospital of Orebro in Sweden, presents in the BioInitiative Report that with a decade of mobile phone use there is a 20% increase in the probability of developing a brain tumor (malignant swelling). However, if the use is continuous on the same side of the skull, the probability increases by 200%, i.e., the risk is multiplied tenfold!

On December 6, 2007 a study by Israeli scientists was published, revealing “a link between mobile phone use and the presentation of a parotid gland tumor”. While shortly thereafter a study from the University of Uppsala – commissioned by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum -, which notes that using a mobile phone during night hours activates the body's stress system, resulting in insomnia and a reduction of “deep” sleep.

Cellular stress is a new threat. Dr. Martin Blank, a professor at Columbia University, notes that “the cells of the human body react to electromagnetic radiation, even at very low emission levels, as they do to other environmental toxins, for example toxic chemicals”.

Independent researchers are particularly cautious about studies funded by companies. “Tumors in the brain develop over a period of 15-20 years. Most studies that exonerate mobile phones do not look at such a time depth, nor at heavy usage”, emphasizes the BioInitiative Report.

What is happening with the new phones? “In third‑generation mobile phones, the way the signal is configured changes. They also contain lower frequencies, at which the human brain also operates. Therefore, there is a concern in the scientific community that the effects of new phones on brain function may be increased. For this reason’ further research is required”, responds Ms. Konstantina Nikita, professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens.

Society and governments must act based on the Precautionary Principle. No one says that mobiles and other technological applications should be thrown into the technology trash can. Immediate tightening of emission limits (both for antennas and mobiles) is required, as well as the monitoring of all mobiles and the certification – public disclosure of their SAR (Specific Absorption Rate, which shows the power absorbed by the organism).
