Online sales and auction service eBay on Wednesday asked its customers to change their passwords due to an attack by hackers who stole users' personal data.
During the cyberattack, the hackers gained access to a database that contained encrypted passwords and other data. However, eBay assured that credit card or bank account details were not stolen.
The hackers managed to steal employee passwords of eBay, thanks to which they gained access to the database between the last days of February and the first days of March. However, the intrusion was detected two weeks ago.
After conducting extensive checks on its systems, the company announced that it has not been found that the hackers made transactions using eBay users' accounts. However, it emphasized that it is requesting password changes for security reasons.
The database contained records such as customer names, encrypted passwords, email, postal addresses, phone numbers and birth dates.
