The European Union, a few days before the official end of support for Windows XP, issued a warning to all users of the platform, informing them that upgrading to a newer version of the operating system is absolutely necessary for their effective protection.
Europol's European Cybercrime Center (EC3), an organization working under the close supervision of the European Union, explains in the document it released that computers running Windows XP will be vulnerable to attacks after April 8, as new security updates will stop being released.
"This does not mean that Windows XP computers will stop working. It means that there will be no more security updates, hotfixes, online technical content updates, or any kind of technical support for the Windows XP operating system after this date. This also coincides with the end of support for Office 2003," the announcement said.
"Computers still running Windows XP after April 8, 2014, will not be adequately protected, even if they have an antivirus or firewall. To avoid security risks and significant data breaches, it is recommended to upgrade the operating system to a newer version before this date.".
EC3 also points out that users who do not plan to immediately abandon Windows XP should install all updates for the operating system and Office 2003, including the latest patches that will be released by Microsoft on April 8.
