Google 27,477 requests for data affecting 42,648 accounts, the company revealed. The numbers are slightly higher than those reported by Google for the first half of last year, which involved 25,879 requests for 42,500 accounts.
The numbers on both accounts are much higher in 2013 than the previous year, suggesting an increased interest by authorities in the digital lives of their suspects.
Yahoo's Transparency Report for the second half of 2013 shows that the company received 21,425 requests for data from around the world, affecting 32,493 accounts. That means the company received 50,895 government requests in 2013, affecting 95,268 accounts.
These numbers also include Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) requests.
None of the companies were able to provide precise details on how many such requests they received, but will do so at a later date. That's because the U.S. government has agreed to allow companies to only disclose the number of FISA requests with a six-month delay and per 1,000, which led to a series of confusing transparency reports earlier this year.
