Citizens will enjoy free WiFi until the end of the year in 4,000 indoor and outdoor locations across the country.
Public free wireless internet access (WiFi) points will cover 302 of the country's 325 municipalities. The municipality of Athens and 22 other municipalities were excluded.
The plan was presented today by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Michalis Chrysochoidis.
As he announced:
– In the first project, 15,000 access points will be activated in 4,000 spaces in municipalities, museums and ports
– The second project will expand to large areas of
KOUT: The maximum budget for the project amounts to 15 million euros and the funds will come from the NSRF
– The third project concerns universities, hospitals and public transport. The project, with a budget of 15 million euros, will proceed with a framework agreement, with an open international tender and will be financed through the Digital Convergence operational program.
Citizens will be able to connect for a period of 30 minutes, provided that they are within 20 meters of the access point for indoor areas, and within 100 meters for outdoor areas.
Each point will have the ability to serve approximately 40 to 50 users simultaneously who will be able to:
– Have simple access to the internet but with restrictions on inappropriate content, streaming files, etc., as well as a speed limit of a maximum of 1 to 1.5Mbps.
– Have access to information about the region and the city
– Have access to services from the municipality.
Apart from Athens, 22 other municipalities
The municipality of Athens is absent from the list of municipalities where access points will be deployed, because it has its own wi-fi system that is not compatible with the one that will be created, as well as 22 other municipalities, including Chalandri, Petroupoli, Kropia, Keratsini - Drapetsona and Polygyros, which did not respond to the invitation of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks to indicate points for the installation of wifi hotspots.

In the second phase of the project, wifi hotspots will be installed in special facilities such as ports, open sports areas, archaeological sites, etc. for the coverage of which different technical specifications are required.
Trains, buses and trolleybuses
In addition to the 4,000 points, access points will also be installed on 1,200 to 1,500 buses and trolleybuses, while within the next four months the network will have been developed in all metro stations, without, at present, any provision for access on metro trains.
