Facebook 's acquisition of WhatsApp caused a sensation mainly because of the outrageous sum of $19 billion, but also because of the battle it won against other suitors.
The rumors that Facebook "pre-empted" Google , which offered $10 billion to acquire WhatsApp, ultimately appear to be untrue , after the company's vice president, Sundar Pichai , denied them in statements at MWC 2014
Sundar Pichai congratulated the WhatsApp team for the successful work and the deal, while admitting that there had been previous meetings about some kind of collaboration between Google and WhatsApp, but not an acquisition.
