The President of Turkey signs a controversial law for the internet

Turkish-President-Signs-Controversial-Internet-Law-Govt-Promises-Amendments

The controversial Turkish internet legislation was signed by President Abdullah Gul.

The announcement was made via his Twitter feed. The law is seen by many, including Turkish opposition and human rights groups, as violating civil liberties.

“I am aware of the problems, mainly in two points … these concerns should be taken into account in the new law,” Gul said, referring to future amendments promised by the government.

Under the bill, authorities can require Internet providers to block sites they deem to be privacy-invading. Of course, this could give lawmakers the ability to block any website they want with few or no consequences.

After strong criticism from many countries and organizations, the Turkish government is now proposing to amend the law slightly and require telecommunications companies to notify a judge of any decision to block a website. The decision must be issued within 48 hours or the block will be canceled.
