Today – and every year such a day for the past eleven years- the Safe Internet Day is celebrated
Six out of ten internet users are unaware of the dangers lurking in cyberspace and if one considers that children aged 10 to 15 use a computer almost daily (mostly from their home), and children 12 to 15 use their mobile phone, one realizes how important it is to inform about the safe use of technologies by children as well as their parents. For this reason today – and every year such a day for the past eleven years- Safe Internet Day is celebrated.
The data on users' knowledge regarding security matters is alarming: 64% of users are unaware of internet risks, 57% are unaware of the existence of mobile security software, 50% do not use protection and safeguarding measures (password, security software, backup), 56% have access to social network accounts, while 39% do not take special measures for using public Wi‑Fi connections, and 3 in 10 do not disconnect from public wireless networks.
Recognizing the need for continuous and proper information for parents and children on new technologies, WIND has been implementing (since 2011) the information campaign “Kids@safety, Internet, mobile and child” (www.kidsatsafety.gr) in Athens and the region, with the central slogan: “Your Mind Before You Click”.
This year, WIND, in collaboration with the Greek Safer Internet Center and the SaferInternet.gr action (www.saferinternet.gr), is planning a series of informative events that begin with participation in the celebration of Safer Internet Day, February 11, 2014, at the National Center for Research and Natural Sciences "Demokritos".
The campaign “Kids@safety, Internet, mobile and child” hosts on the official WIND website https://www.wind.gr/gr/wind/upostirixi/asfalis-hrisi-kinitou-internet/kidssafety/ useful information, news and audiovisual material with advice for parents, children and adolescents, research on children's behavior on the internet and its use, while also referring to websites of Greek organizations dealing with the protection of children.
In its four years of action, WIND, through the campaign, supported 60 Workshops in schools and Municipalities, distributed 100,000 information leaflets for parents and children, participated in three surveys on internet safety, while supporting the online and interactive application of useful advice www.cyberkid.gov.gr by the Cybercrime Unit.
