Nine years ago, Dennis Aampo Sorensen was seriously injured in his left hand and had to be amputated. Now, he has regained the sense of touch, thanks to a pioneering bionic hand created by an international team of scientists.
The researchers embedded electrodes in Sorensen's hand, as well as touch sensors in the prosthetic hand, which connects to the rest of his nerves . With the hand, Sorensen was able to recognize different objects by their texture.
«I could feel things I haven't been able to feel for nine years» said Sorensen. Although so far, he is the only one who has tried this particular prosthetic hand, in case it proves that it works comfortably and easily for the user's everyday life, it will undoubtedly change the data on prosthetic limbs.
Even though it will probably take years before the system is ready for clinical use, according to the researchers it is «definitely a significant step in the right direction»
