Only a small number of companies plan to limit the use of smartphones and tablets in the workplace
Most companies see the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend (where employees use their personal mobile devices such as smartphones for work) as a growing threat to their businesses. However, the percentage of companies taking steps to address this threat is relatively small, according to the results of the Global Corporate IT Security Risks 2013 survey, conducted by B2B International in collaboration with Kaspersky Lab.
The survey, which included representatives from companies in 24 countries, found that nearly half (49%) of those surveyed in Greece said that BYOD poses a threat to corporate security.
In Japan, respondents expressed the highest levels of concern about this growing trend and the associated threats, with 93% agreeing that BYOD poses a threat to businesses. Companies in North America (69%) also expressed high levels of concern, as did those in the Middle East (65%) and Western Europe (62%).
At the same time, most companies said they do not plan to take prohibitive measures against the use of personal devices at work. On the contrary, about 25% of Greek respondents said they plan to encourage the use of smartphones and tablets in the workplace, while 43% of IT executives said they do not believe that prohibitive measures will prevent employees from using their devices.
However, globally, the percentage of companies planning to restrict the use of personal devices at work increased by 6% in one year (from 19% in 2012 to 25% in 2013). In Greece, this percentage is 16%. The same is true of the number of companies planning to impose stricter restrictions on the use of personal devices in the workplace (16%).
