iOS 27: Siri will offer automatic deletion of conversations

Apple is preparing a major upgrade for Siri, which is said to include the ability to automatically delete conversation history. The new version of Siri, which will be more like an AI chatbot and is expected to be released with iOS 27, will allow users to choose to keep conversations for 30 days, a year , or forever.

According to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman , Apple aims to leverage its strong privacy profile to a differentiate itself from the competition in the artificial intelligence space. The new Siri will function more like chatbot, offering more natural conversations and improved contextual understanding.

This move contrasts with major competitors, such as OpenAI with ChatGPT, Google with Gemini , and Microsoft with Copilot, which generally only offer temporary incognito chats (if they offer anything at all). Most leading AI chatbots today rely heavily on history and memory systems to personalize responses and improve future interactions.

Siri News: Apple's Privacy Strategy in the Age of AI

Apple seems to be betting that people are willing to give up some convenience in the name of greater privacy as concerns surrounding artificial intelligence continue to grow. The company is replacing many of its underlying components with Google's Gemini technology , but it appears  to be trying to turn some of weaknesses Apple 's perceived into a selling point.

As Gurman notes, Apple will put tighter limits on how memory works, including restrictions on what information can be retained and how long it can be kept. This approach reflects Apple's long-standing philosophy on privacy, which has become even more important as AI assistants have become more capable and more data-hungry.

The new auto-delete feature mirrors the approach Apple has already taken in Messages , where users can choose “retention time windows.” This design pattern suggests that Apple sees the retention option as a user -trust feature, rather than simply an organizational tool .

Competition and industry trends

The industry is moving from simple question-and-answer bots to more sophisticated systems with persistent context, personalized memory, and interface orchestration. However, this also creates tension between users’ desire for convenience and the demands of regulators and privacy advocates for minimization, consent, and clear deletion controls.

Apple's reported auto-delete option fits into a broader trend toward maintaining user control rather than defaulting to unlimited storage. If Apple adopts auto-delete by design, it could pressure competitors to make data retention controls more visible and offer better deletion tools.

For users, the benefits include better control over sensitive conversations, reduced privacy concerns , and easier compliance with personal or work data hygiene. However, less data retention may reduce convenience, as users relying on AI memory may lose the context of conversations after deletion.
