Tech companies seem to want to come to blows, but this time, Google doesn't seem to have any element of rivalry.
The internet company has about 43,000 Macs, and for all that number of computers, it had to create its own suite of management tools. Why? Well, apparently because Apple hasn't done a very good job of supporting its own management tools.
Google engineers said in an interview: "We don't use any of Apple's tools to manage Macs. Apple produces two tools, Mac OS X server and Apple Remote Desktop, which can't manage more than 50, 100, 200 machines."
So the company developed its own tools or chose to use open source tools for configuration, management packaging, monitoring system layers, and whatever else is needed. Google is willing to share one of the tools, which is called CanHazImage, and it will be open to everyone.
