Although most people don't choose Facebook to search for news, many of them end up getting their news that way, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center.
Overall, about half of adult Facebook users, a percentage of 47% find their news there.
As Pew reports, “This equates to 30% of the total population.”
The survey was conducted between August 21 and September 2 in the US and involved 5,173 adults, of whom 78% ended up reading the news on Facebook, even if they are on it for another reason.
Even so, “the research provides evidence that Facebook exposes some people to news they might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn,” according to Pew.
For example, 38% of people who are highly interested in their daily news report that Facebook is a satisfactory way to read the news, compared to 47% of people who are less interested in developments.
