A new SIM card for "simple" mobile phones aimed at Muslim users was designed by Greek engineer Yannis Hatzopoulos.
The difference between this particular card and those in circulation is that it allows, among other things, the user to easily find the direction of Mecca on their phone, to be notified with a ringtone about the time of Muslim prayer, to automatically set the phone to block calls during prayer time, to have access to an Islamic calendar, etc.
These services are offered through the so-called SIM Application Toolkit and it is up to the provider to activate them. As is obvious, Mr. Hatzopoulos' SIM card is aimed at providers operating in Asian and African countries with a strong Muslim element.
It should be noted that in the past, mobile phones from companies such as LG have been released that had such applications, while there are also related apps for smartphones. However, the Greek engineer's SIM card can be placed even in the cheapest devices, which is particularly important for providers operating in the developing markets of Asia and Africa where there are tens of millions of Muslim users.
It should be noted that Mr. Hatzopoulos' card is being presented at the AfricaCOM exhibition in Cape Town (November 12-14, 2013), while its promotion in the Asian market has been undertaken by the company Bluefish Technologies.
