Google is announcing a new AI Inbox for Gmail, which, instead of presenting your emails in a traditional list, uses artificial intelligence to offer personalized tasks and summaries of topics you might want to follow up on from your emails.
This is a potentially big change to how you navigate Gmail, especially if you have a lot to sort through or if you already use your Inbox as a to-do list. In a demo video, AI Inbox suggests tasks like rescheduling a dentist appointment, responding to a coach, and paying a sports tournament fee. It also notifies you of various topics by summarizing them (like a family gathering, etc.).

Gmail: Testing AI Inbox in the US
Google is initially rolling out AI Inbox to “trusted testers” in the US using browsers. It will be available first for consumer Gmail accounts — not Workspace accounts.
Blake Barnes, VP of Product for Gmail, says there's no limit to the number of tasks Gmail can suggest. In general, AI Inbox tries to prioritize what's important to each user based on signals like who they email and what they respond to most quickly. However, too many tasks could just perpetuate Inbox's overload, but with a new design.

All consumer Gmail users will also get suggested personalized replies, AI summaries for conversations , and tool Help Me Write Google's — all features that Google previously included in paid plans — at no extra cost. Subscribers to Google One AI Pro ($19.99 per month) and Ultra ($249.99 per month) plans in the U.S. will get a Grammarly-like correction feature, as well as AI summaries in search results.

Those who don't want to use AI features in Gmail can turn them off (though that also disables other smart features, like spell check). The company also says it doesn't use Gmail content to train its AI Gemini.
