Apple Watch Ultra's siren saved diver's life

A diver from Mumbai didn't even know Apple Watch Ultra had a siren until it automatically activated and saved his life.

Apple Watch Ultra siren

It's not the most well-known or advertised feature of the Apple Watch Ultra, but every model to date has had an 86-decibel siren. Apple designed it to go off either when the wearer turns it on or when they're unable to do so (as in this case) and the Apple Watch Ultra's depth sensor determines that there's a problem.

According to India Today, Kshitij Zodape was scuba diving in the Bay of Bengal near Puducherry this summer. When he was about 120 feet below the surface of the sea, a weight belt he was wearing came loose. Zodape found himself in a dangerous situation as the loss of the belt caused him to rise rapidly towards the surface, which can cause serious health problems due to the sudden change in pressure.

"Before I knew it, my watch started showing warnings. It was telling me I needed to slow down because my ascent was too fast and could cause injury," he continued. "I couldn't control [what was happening], I was still climbing fast."

When he failed to respond and continued to ascend, his Apple Watch Ultra activated its siren. This caught the attention of a dive instructor who was with Zodape. They were able to locate him and help him return to the surface safely.

Zodape said he had no idea this feature existed and thanked Apple for the technology that saved his life.

This story highlights the importance of technology in user safety, especially in high-risk activities like diving. The Apple Watch Ultra, with its advanced features, proves to be a valuable tool for enthusiasts of diving and other dangerous activities.

The ability to automatically activate the siren in an emergency can make the difference between life and death. Apple continues to innovate in the field of mobile devices, offering solutions that not only improve users' everyday lives but also protect their lives in critical moments.

The Mumbai diver's experience is a prime example of how technology can act as an invisible "guardian angel" when human ability is inadequate. In the world of diving, safety is usually based on specialized equipment and ongoing training. However, having a "smart" watch that can detect unusual conditions and react automatically adds a whole new dimension of protection. The siren function, which in other cases might have been considered unnecessary or secondary, proved to be crucial, highlighting that often the most life-saving innovations are those that go unnoticed by the user.

The incident also reveals something deeper: technology wearable is no longer limited to matters of convenience or health monitoring, but is dynamically entering the field of prevention and survival. For a diver, a mountaineer, or even an everyday citizen who may find themselves in a sudden emergency situation, the ability to automatically alert or warn the environment can prove invaluable.

The Apple Watch Ultra case also shows Apple’s tendency to incorporate features that are not only aimed at mass consumption, but also at specialized needs. This reinforces the company’s profile as an organization that aims not just to create “gadgets”, but to develop tools for life. Zodape’s story is not just a rescue incident, but a reminder that innovation acquires real value when it is directly connected to human life.
