Instagram ads: The 'pay or consent' approach is coming to the UK

Meta is bringing its model -or-consent advertising to the UK after months of negotiations with regulators over the controversial policy. The update will force Instagram and Facebook to choose between seeing personalized ads or paying monthly subscriptions to enjoy an ad-free experience.

Subscriptions start at £2.99 per month (about $4) for users connected via the internet. Android and iOS users face higher charges of £3.99 per month (about $5.33). Meta attributes the increased price to “the fees imposed by Apple and Google.”

This approach is “holistic”, as users are forced to either sign up for all accounts or none. Each additional account incurs an additional charge of either £2 or £3 per month.

Meta's decision to introduce this policy in the UK comes after it was rejected by the European Union, where regulators raised concerns about privacy and user choice. The policy has drawn criticism from consumer and user rights groups, who argue that the choice is restrictive and does not provide a real alternative.

Meta argues that the new policy gives users more flexibility and control over the ads they see, while also providing a source of revenue for the company. However, critics point out that paying to avoid ads can be seen as a form of blackmail, especially for users who do not want to share their personal data. While the company presents it as a “choice,” the reality for users is more complex: they either accept the commercial exploitation of their data, or resort to the payment solution to maintain a minimum level of privacy.

The debate over the 'pay or consent' policy highlights broader issues surrounding online privacy and the handling of personal data by big tech companies. As users become increasingly aware of their rights online, companies are being forced to reexamine their practices and adapt to new market demands.

Meta, as one of the world’s largest social media platforms, is at the center of this debate, and its decisions could influence how other companies approach advertising and privacy online. This development will be closely watched by regulators and users, as it could set a precedent for future technology policies.

Moreover, the financial side of the case is not negligible. For millions of users, the cost may seem small, but in a period where subscription services are multiplying, the burden can become significant. This model may serve as a test of how consumers will react to a more “aggressive” strategy of commoditizing privacy.

The crucial question is whether “pay or consent” will become established as a new industry practice or whether it will go down in history as a failed attempt to turn privacy into a luxury product.
