Pinterest , the well-known platform for creating visual mood boards, is accused by the digital rights organization Noyb of exploiting users' personal data without their consent in order to make a profit .
Noyb, a non-profit organization that protects the digital rights of European users, has filed an official complaint against Pinterest for violating the privacy of 136 million Europeans, as the platform “profits” from exploiting their personal data through personalized advertising.
Cleanthi Sardeli, a data protection lawyer at Noyb, highlighted that Pinterest is discreetly tracking users without their consent, allowing the platform to illegally exploit data . The “ad personalization” feature is set by default, using users’ data to tailor ads. The platform claims that this tracking is based on a “legitimate interest.”
However, the Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that personalized advertising cannot be based on a “legitimate interest,” as the lack of opt-in violates the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Noyb is asking Pinterest to delete the data it processes for personalized advertising and ensure compliance with access.
The non-profit organization also proposes imposing an administrative fine to prevent similar violations in the future.
