Charges against two men for crypto scam “OmegaPro”

Another case of financial fraud in the crypto space, as US authorities have prosecuted two men accused of defrauding investors and stealing more than $650 million (through a crypto multi-level marketing scheme called OmegaPro).

OmegaPro crypto scam

prosecutors in Puerto Rico have charged Michael Shannon Sims (48) and Juan Carlos Reynoso (57), who were behind an alleged “investment” platform that promised returns of 300% within 16 months.

"OmegaPro promised financial freedom, but it brought financial ruin," said Guy Ficco, head of criminal investigations for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

From Instagram to Burj Khalifa – How the image of legitimacy was built

The defendants used impressive social media campaigns, lavish events and dazzling visuals — such as displaying the OmegaPro logo on the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai — to create the illusion of credibility and investment opportunity.

One of the most prominent examples was a video, published on LinkedIn , showing the company's event in Dubai, attended by well-dressed "investors."

But behind the cameras, authorities say it was a traditional “Ponzi scheme,” disguised as an advanced financial technology.

From the “investment packages” to the collapse

According to the US Department of Justice, from 2019 to 2023, the defendants promoted “investment packages” to unsuspecting users worldwide, demanding payment in cryptocurrencies, while promising high returns thanks to management by… “top Forex traders.”

When the platform collapsed under the pretext of a hacking attack, the scammers claimed that the funds had been transferred to a new company called Broker Group. The result was the same: users were never able to get their money.

Analysis: Why crypto Ponzi schemes continue to thrive?

The OmegaPro case is not the first – and likely not the last. In an environment where investors are hungry for quick returns and knowledge about crypto remains limited for many, similar malicious schemes find fertile ground .

The fact that the platforms operate outside the traditional banking system and with anonymity makes it difficult to movements capital, while social media functions as an ideal tool for reaching new victims.

Conclusion: Investment “advice” requires judgment and caution

OmegaPro's case is another resounding bell: financial excitement around crypto should not replace rational thinking, due diligence, and a basic understanding of risks.
