Ring: Upgrades cameras with new AI features

Ring asubsidiary of Amazon, announced the introduction of a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that significantly upgrades motion alerts on smart cameras and smart doorbells. The new feature provides users with more detailed and descriptive real-time updates about motion detected in their space.

Instead of generic “motion detected” notifications, users will now receive messages like: “A person is walking up the stairs with a black dog” or “Two people are looking at a white car parked in the driveway.” Artificial intelligence analyzes the first part of each motion-triggered clip and provides a text description, providing greater clarity and the ability to immediately assess the situation.

The new feature is in beta and is currently only available to Ring Home Premium in the US and Canada. The company offers the option to disable the feature via settings in the Ring app.

In a related post, Jamie Siminoff —Ring founder and current vice president of home security at Amazon—said that this feature is just the beginning. In the near future, Ring plans to launch additional AI tools, including a system that can combine multiple motion events from different cameras into a single alert.

Additionally, the company is working on a “custom anomaly detection”, which will allow users to set alerts for unusual events. Users will be able to define what is considered “unusual” or alarming about their space, so the camera will only send an alert when it detects such an event. While it may offer increased security, this feature could raise privacy concerns. The fact that the device “learns” the user’s routine—as convenient as it may sound—intensifies concerns about surveillance, and Ring has a history of privacy issues.

Siminoff admitted that the company is still in the early stages of exploiting the potential of AI. “We’re just beginning to scratch the surface of AI. I feel like we’re going back to the very early days of Ring — I see limitless possibilities for new experiences we can invent for our neighbors,” he said in a recent post.

Ring’s new update clearly demonstrates the company’s strategic direction towards smarter and more autonomous home security solutions, with artificial intelligence playing a leading role. From a technological perspective, the ability to provide customized motion descriptions and detect deviations from routine is a significant development. It makes notifications more understandable and useful, especially in situations where an immediate response is required.

These announcements follow the recent rollout of a new Ring AI search feature, which allows users to locate specific moments within stored video, significantly reducing the time needed to review surveillance footage.

With the above innovations, Ring aspires to transform smart security systems into even more proactive and customized tools for home protection – always, however, under the shadow of the need for transparency and strict management of personal data.

It's clear that with the new AI features, Ring is trying to strengthen its role in the smart home security market, seeking to offer users not just more data, but also meaningful information about what's happening around their home.
