The screensaver was originally created to prevent screen burn-in, where static images would "burn in" if the screen was left idle for a long period of time.
Today, burn-in is less of a concern, but screensavers are still used, primarily on televisions.
Apple tvOS
If you have an Apple TV 4K, you can enjoy beautiful, high-resolution, slow-motion screensavers of deserts, forests, and cityscapes. You can use the Siri to get information or switch screensavers. You can also display a slideshow of your own photos through the app , where you select General and Screensavers.

Android TV and Google TV
For those of you who have a TV or dongle with Google software, the process for changing the screensaver is similar whether you're using the older Android TV or the newer Google TV. By default, a curated collection of photos is displayed, but you can change it to your own photos if you want.
From the home screen, select the settings gear icon in the top right. Then, select “Device Preferences” and “screensaver” (for Android TV) or “System and environment mode” (for Google TV). You can switch between Google Photos, your own photos, or an experimental mode that pulls images from a wider range of sources. You can also adjust other settings, like when the screensaver starts.
Personal photos are pulled from Google Photos, allowing you to use the Android or iOS app to set a specific screensaver if you wish. Note that there are also third-party screensavers you can install on your TV or connected device, such as the Ambient TV and Photo Gallery and Screensaver apps.
Amazon Fire TV
The screensaver situation on TVs, dongles, and Fire TV boxes is quite complicated, as it's not the same on all devices and Amazon seems to change it regularly. However, regardless of your device, you can press the menu button (the three horizontal lines) on your remote while the screensaver is showing to access its settings.

The newer Amazon Fire TV Omni and the 2nd-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Max come with a default screensaver, which is essentially the same screen you'd see on an Echo Show, with added widgets and extra features on top of a curated photo slideshow. On other devices, you'll just get the photo slideshow.
To make changes and access your own photos, head to the menu. These include your daily memories and recent photos. This may require some editing via the Amazon Photos app, which is available for Android and iOS. You can, for example, set up a list of favorite images to use as a screensaver.
Roku TV
To change the screensaver on a Roku TV or a Roku device connected to a TV, press the home button on your remote (it looks like a little house).
Then, select Settings and Screensaver to configure the time and content. You can choose from a variety of built-in and third-party screensaver options, including your own personal photos (which you must upload online through your Roku account).
Note that Roku themes (select Themes from Settings) include both wallpaper and screensaver, giving you multiple options. You can also explore the Screensavers category in the Roku Channel Store, where you'll find a variety of third-party screensavers you can install on your device, including those featuring nature and landmarks.
