A potential new SOS feature for the Apple Watch described in a new patent application could help save drowning swimmers.

The patent for the SOS feature describes how the Apple Watch can detect “abnormal behavior” and automatically transmit a signal for help.
Apple begins by noting that drowning is a major cause of accidents, especially when it comes to children. The company highlights the need for quick response when someone is in danger in the water.
Apple notes that some pools are equipped with underwater camera systems designed to detect a swimmer in difficulty and alert lifeguards, but these are expensive to install and unreliable.

The SOS patent application states that a wearable device like an Apple Watch would work in more environments, be more reliable, and detect more types of problems.

For example, if the watch is set to note that the user cannot swim, it can automatically send a signal if they enter a deeper area of the pool.
Alerts can be sent to other devices (for example, friends and family members who are at the pool) and can also be interfaced with existing drowning detection and alarm systems to automatically alert lifeguards.
As always, the new Apple Watch SOS feature isn't guaranteed to eventually make it to the watch, but this seems like a great candidate for inclusion in a future watchOS.

Apple Watches can already detect and respond to falls, car accidents, and heart problems. The company shared stories from some of those who saved their lives in two videos, titled “what's your emergency” and “Dear Apple.”
