NASA SpaceX Crew-8: Crew heads to ISS

NASA announced that a four-person international crew has reached orbit after a successful launch to the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday. This is NASA 's SpaceX Crew-8 mission .

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket sent the Dragon spacecraft into orbit carrying NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps , along with Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin .

According to Bill Nelson , the new crew is being transported to the station to conduct more than 200 scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. The goal is to conduct research that will advance and help space exploration, as well as research that will benefit humanity on Earth.

During Dragon's flight, SpaceX will monitor a series of automated maneuvers of the spacecraft from its control center in California. NASA teams will also monitor space station operations throughout the flight.

The Dragon spacecraft, called Endeavour, will autonomously dock to the front of the station's Harmony module at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday, March 5.

Crew-8 will join the Expedition 70 crew on the space station, which includes astronauts from NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and Roscosmos . For a short time , the number of crew members on the International Space Station will increase to 11. A few days later, the four members of Crew-7 will return to Earth.

Crew-8 will conduct new scientific investigations aimed at preparing for exploration beyond low Earth orbit and for discoveries for humanity on Earth. Experiments include, among others, a study of brain organoids to understand neurodegenerative disorders, shifts in body fluids during spaceflight , and the effects of ultraviolet radiation and microgravity on plant growth.

Matthew Dominick is the commander of Crew-8. Michael Barratt is the pilot, and this is his third visit to the space station. Jeanette Epps is a mission specialist and will work with the commander and pilot to monitor the spacecraft during the dynamic launch and reentry phases of the flight. Finally, Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkinis flying on his first mission. He will serve as flight engineer.

The SpaceX Crew-8 mission is part of NASA's broader strategy for commercial space. NASA seeks to create a robust commercial space ecosystem that will enable the United States to maintain its leadership in space exploration and development.
