Philippines: Cyberattacks by Chinese hackers thwarted

Chinese hackers tried to break into websites and systems of the Philippine president and government agencies, including one that promotes maritime security, but failed, an official from the Information and Communications Ministry said on Monday.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the National Coast Guard website and the personal website of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. were among the targets of unsuccessful hacker attacks in January, DICT spokesman Renato Paraisoradio station DWPM.

“We do not attribute this incident to any state. However, using the Internet, we traced its origin to China,” Paraiso said, adding that the hackers were identified as using the services of Chinese state-owned company Unicom.

“We are reaching out to the Chinese government to help us prevent further attacks.”

Unicom of heightened tensions with China, mainly over territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

The Philippines is currently working on a five-year cybersecurity strategy to strengthen its cyber defense forces and counter attacks and digital crimes. Its military announced last year that it would create a cyber command center.
