Completely’ redesigned in Unreal Engine 5, Persona 3 Reload features stunning new visual effects, gameplay adjusted to be more in line with Persona 5, and additional content for anyone who wants to experience this revival.

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered – 14 February

The upcoming reveal of Crystal Dynamics ' next Tomb Raider game remains a mystery. In the meantime, immerse yourself in Lara Croft's seminal era with this comprehensive collection that includes the original trilogy of Tomb Raider games. All expansions and hidden levels have been included, while the core gameplay has been updated for a modern experience. And for those feeling a wave of nostalgia, there's even a photo mode to enjoy, which lets you create 2000s-inspired wallpapers for your computer .

Star Wars: Dark Forces remaster – 28 February

There is no shortage of excellent first-person Star Wars video game shooters these days, but Dark Forces from 1995 was a revelatory experience. Almost 30 years later, you can relive Kyle Katarn's adventures as he joins the Rebel Alliance and infiltrates the Empire, as the remastered edition supports 4K graphics and 120fps, upgraded gameplay and improved lighting. Nightdive Studios, specialists in video game restoration, are behind this project, so expectations are high that the final result will be a fun and faithful (though unofficial) return to a galaxy far away.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake – 28 February

More than 10 years ago, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons arrived and left an indelible impression with their elegant story about the brothers who play head‑to‑head against the flexible gameplay with two levers. We expect something similar in the remake – Avantgarden takes on this project instead of the original studio Starbreeze – only this time with a prettier upgrade to the Unreal Engine 5 engine and the possibility of two‑player.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – 29 February

The next chapter in the Final Fantasy VII Remake videogame trilogy, titled Rebirth, hints at an even greater departure from the source material as it explores familiar locations and surprising new paths. We already know that the game takes place immediately after the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake and will end at a strategic point in the story, but it remains to be seen how big a change this moment will be. The program includes a visit to popular locations like the Gold Saucer, while the gameplay has been enhanced with new moves to master.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake

Both Star Ocean: The Second Story R and the two videogames of Octopath Traveler are excellent examples of HD-2D games, and Dragon Quest III is the next game on Square Enix's list to receive this upgrade. Beyond that, we don't know much else about the game or its release date, but Square Enix promises that the combination of pixel art and 3D effects will be impressive to see in action.

Front Mission 3

The remastered versions of the Front Mission 1 and 2 video games were satisfying returns to that universe of mechanized warfare, but for fans in the US, Front Mission 3 is where the series truly began. Front Mission 3 was the first game in the series to be released outside of Japan, and like the previous two updates, you can expect a game with improved graphics, more content to explore, and improved gameplay.

Gothic

Some video games age gracefully, while others... not so much. Gothic seemed dated even back in 2001, with many reviews pointing out the stiffness of the combat system and clumsy controls, but Alkimia Interactive aims to transform the experience with some big gameplay improvements. If you're interested in seeing the roots of this dark fantasy series, Gothic Classic is available on PC and Nintendo Switch.

Max Payne 1 and 2

Get ready to get excited, because Remedy Entertainment has been having a great time lately. With Alan Wake 2 garnering praise from all corners of the globe, the studio is gearing up to go back in time with remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. This is a very Payne experience. Although Remedy sold the rights to the Max Payne series to Rockstar Games in 2002, the two companies have joined forces to combine both games into a package filled with gritty storytelling, raw action, and the definition of bullet-time gameplay – just like the game that took the industry.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater – 2024

It has long been considered the ultimate game of the series, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is being prepared for a grand revival and is expected to be released in 2024. Konami plans to bring the origin story of Big Boss into the modern era with “cutting‑edge graphics and three‑dimensional sound”, also preserving the elements that made the game as iconic as it was before.

Upcoming Videogame Remakes and Upgrades

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

The remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time by Ubisoft had an unexpected development trajectory, as delays piled up and development was moved from Ubisoft's Indian studios to Montreal. The good news is that while The Sands of Time has been postponed indefinitely, there is now an excellent spin-off available. If you're in the mood for a Prince of Persia game that is influenced by its past and metroidvanias, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is an outstanding game worth checking out.

Riven

You couldn't shake a CD-ROM drive in the '90s without encountering the wildly popular Myst. Thankfully, Riven proved to be a strong successor, and after years, it's making a strong comeback. Built from the ground up by Cyan, the company even brought in developers from The Starry Expanse Project, a fictionalized reimagining of Riven, to help create the new version of the game.

Silent Hill 2

Bloober Team may have as many successes as failures, but there is hope that the studio behind the video games Layers of Fear and The Blair Witch can faithfully recreate one of the greatest survival-horror games of all time. The HD port of Silent Hill 2 in 2012 did not do justice to the game, and it will be interesting to see how this sequel will expand the original game when it releases later in 2024.

Splinter Cell

Splinter Cell fans have been asking Ubisoft to revive the series – at least not as a cameo in Ghost Recon – and those requests are finally being answered with a full-scale remake of the 2002 game. Development has remained under wraps since the 2021 reveal, but Ubisoft has explained that it aims to refresh the series while maintaining its core. Splinter Cell is being built on the Snowdrop engine, the same software used to create impressive games like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

What exactly is happening with the scheduled redesign of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic by Embracer Group? The game has been plagued by issues since its announcement in 2021, with reports of an indefinite delay after the dismissal of two lead developers from Aspyr in 2022, with Saber Interactive taking over development duties, and another report stating that progress has been completely halted. Embracer Group has not officially confirmed any of these alleged details, and we hope the project has not yet been exiled to the far reaches of the galaxy.

The Witcher

While new games set in the Witcher universe are under development, CD Projekt Red is also working on a remake of the first game. Like other projects it is developing, the Witcher remake is being built with Unreal Engine 5. Fool’s Theory is handling the remake, with creative direction coming from many veterans of The Witcher and CDPR.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door – 2024

After 20 years since its first release on the GameCube, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door returns dynamically to the Switch. As with the other classic Nintendo videogames, this new edition will enhance the unparalleled design of the original game with cleaner graphics and will make the endearingly cardboard characters stand out more than ever.

Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP – Summer 2024

It was initially announced as a remake of the classic 2012 game, however you may need to lower your expectations for Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP, as the game will be, instead, an upgraded version. Producer Yoshimi Yasuda explained that this change of direction responded to fan requests and players can also expect reduced loading times, improved hit detection, and enhanced graphical performance.

Braid: Anniversary Edition – April 30

The Braid continues to be a pleasant platformer, but visually, the handcrafted graphics have aged. Fortunately, the upcoming anniversary edition will feature impressive new graphical aspects, along with a whole range of other audio-visual enhancements. The smoother graphics and the improved sound are excellent, but the real draw here will be the 15 hours of commentary from the creator of Braid, Jonathan Blow, and other developers, adding more insight into how this classic game was created.

Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse – Spring 2024

Dear fans of point-and-click adventure games with free detectives and delightful humor deviation, rejoice! Sam and Max return with an upgraded version of the latest game from Telltale Games' revival series. Developer Skunkape has done an excellent job bringing the first two seasons of the Sam and Max games from Telltale into the modern era. For this latest project, you can expect the usual upgrades in this remake as you explore the most dangerous approximate space of existence: the interior of Sam's twisted mind.

Beyond Good and Evil – 2024

It has been 20 years since the first release of Beyond Good and Evil and Ubisoft is preparing to celebrate the beloved sci‑fi adventure and bring it into the modern era. Although the original Xbox listing for the upgraded version has been removed, according to its text, this new edition will support 4K visuals and 60fps, upgraded sound and improved controls when it launches later in 2024.

Shadows of the Damned

The Shadows of the Damned, the strange 2011 game by Suda51 and Shinji Mikami that combined action with not-so-subtle references to genitalia, returns to the future. And that's about as much as we know, as the developer Grasshopper Manufacture kept tight control over information about this upgrade since its initial announcement. For many years it was considered an underrated game full of action and absurd humor. It's pleasant to see demon hunter Garcia Hotspur preparing for a second chance in the big championship, as the original game was only available on PS3 and Xbox 360 at its release.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD – Summer 2024

More than a decade after Luigi's return to his part-time job as a ghost exterminator on the Nintendo 3DS, the first sequel to the ill-fated plumber, Dark Moon, will be brought to the Switch in 2024. Luigi’s Mansion 2 expanded the scope of the original game by sending the eager plumber to five different locations filled with annoying terrorists, spreading terror from a haunted mansion to an abandoned factory, research lab, and many more.
