WAVE uses a charging “plate” embedded beneath the road surface and operates via a second charging plate on the underside of the vehicle to transmit power to the vehicle’s battery without cables. Several such plates have now been installed at the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles, with the goal of reducing emissions. This initiative recognizes the transportation sector’s historical contribution as the largest contributor (27%) to greenhouse gas emissions in both the U.S. and Europe.

At the Port of Los Angeles, there are already 125 kW, 250 kW, 380 kW and even 500 kW power stations. This is beneficial for Los Angeles, but how will the system work in areas with even more severe winter weather conditions?

With an $8.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), a 500 kW WAVE wireless charger is being deployed at a Venture Logistics in the Midwest. The facility operates in harsh conditions with very low temperatures.

After completion this quarter, the 500 kW WAVE charging system will power two of Venture’s Class 8 electric trucks. Representatives from both companies see this project as a pioneering example of high-power wireless charging that enhances capabilities in cold climates. The system aims to address the challenges posed by ice and snow without the need to handle heavy, high-power charging cables in cold temperatures and dangerous, icy surfaces.

Our project with Venture Logistics will demonstrate that wireless charging is the most effective solution for medium and heavy-duty vehicles that require continuous operations and charging infrastructure. According to Robin Mackie, COO of Ideanomics, WAVE’s parent company, we will demonstrate that electric vehicles can operate continuously, charging during their regular operations.
