The Cities Skylines 2 community is becoming increasingly toxic, according to Mariina Hallikainen, CEO of Colossal Order.

With Cities Skylines 2's new editing tools still in testing and plenty of content for the city-building game's sequel planned for next year, Colossal Order is trying to address the "growing toxicity" in the CS2 community, urging players to "always be friendly" to both developers and each other. Additionally, Cities Skylines 2's new modding platform is set to debut in the coming months, and Colossal Order is considering it as its highest priority.

Cities Skylines 2 has struggled since its October 2023 release, with technical and performance issues impacting the gameplay experience. While the city-building game and sequel to the beloved Cities Skylines has struggled to retain its Steam player base, it has a potential longevity ahead of it thanks to community-created content and Cities Skylines 2 mods, which will receive official support from Colossal Order and Paradox in 2024. However, Mariina Hallikainen, CEO of Colossal Order, points out that toxicity in the CS2 community has reached new levels.

“We’re seeing a growing trend of toxicity in our community, something we’ve never experienced to this extent before,” Hallikainen says. “Not just towards our developers, but also towards other members of our community – making people hesitant to participate in the community. In the long run, this will really hurt not only the mood and happiness of community members but also discourage creativity and modding, which would be very sad to see. We appreciate having developers present on various social platforms and having direct communication with the community, but our biggest responsibility will always be to protect the team and ensure that they work in a safe environment, allowing them to do their best, stay healthy and productive. So we hope we can all work together to allow our developers to stay and stay active.”

“Given that the reports of community toxicity in previous Cities Skylines 2 don’t seem to have led to any changes, perhaps you have some constructive suggestions for how we can improve the way we communicate with each other,” Hallikainen says. “Should we strengthen governance, or is the only option to limit our participation? How can we ensure that the community is a safe place for you to share your thoughts and hopes for the game?”
Hallikainen also says there is "no higher priority" than releasing official support for Cities Skylines 2 mods, confirming that the editing interface for the strategy game is expected to be ready for closed beta "in a few weeks." A bug fix package will be released before the editor's release, which will resolve issues with the game's simulation and various visual issues.
