Hyundai and Kia took second place in the US EV (electric) vehicle market, trailing Tesla, after a historic sales year in 2023 .

Hyundai and Kia’s EV sales reached 117,000, accounting for 8% of the total U.S. passenger electric vehicle market in 2023. Hyundai set a sales record with approximately 47,000 purchases for the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 models, while Kia sold approximately 19,000 of its EV6 electric crossover. Additionally, Kia began deliveries of its first three-series electric SUV , the EV9, with 1,113 sales in December.

Despite Ford CEO Jim Farley's statement that Ford remained the second-largest EV brand, Hyundai and Kia overtook the American automaker. Ford sold a new record of 72,608 electric vehicles in the U.S. in 2023, while GM sold an estimated 72,639 electric vehicles, with the Chevy Bolt accounting for more than 85% of its sales.
The development of Hyundai and Kia's electric vehicles has made them the second-largest brand in electric vehicle sales in the US, behind Tesla.
South Korean automakers such as Hyundai and Kia have outsold U.S. automakers GM and Ford, even without the support of tax credits for their electric vehicles. Their success is partly due to their strategy of building electric vehicles from the ground up. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 ranked as the sixth-best-selling electric vehicle in the U.S. last year. Hyundai and Kia also offer smaller electric cars such as the Kona and Niro.
Unlike American companies GM and Ford, which have lagged behind in their efforts to develop electric vehicles, Hyundai and Kia are focusing on the future. As their presence in the electric vehicle sector grows, Hyundai ranks second in reducing CO2 emissions, according to EPA data.

With electric vehicle sales expected to double this year, Hyundai's global president Jose Munoz is optimistic about demand for electric vehicles. He says that if it had more capacity, it could sell even more cars.
