McDonald's, or "McDo" as the French call it, is installing 2,000 new fast-charging points in 700 parking lots across France by 2025. Each McDonald's charging station will offer 150-200 kilowatts per hour of power, so you can charge car in about the time it takes to eat a Big Mac with extra-large fries.

This demonstrates the serious need for fast charging stations in France. Last October, the country had more than 111,000 public charging stations, but only 8% of them had a power of 150 kW or more, with most of them located at motorway. With the McDonald's agreement, the expansion in France has already begun, starting in the suburbs of Paris. The stations will be provided by Izivia, the electric vehicle charging subsidiary of EDF, the companies confirmed in a statement yesterday. Pricing has not yet been confirmed, but the statement said it would be "attractive" and competitive.
France now requires businesses with more than 20 parking spaces to install at least one charging point, with the government’s goal of creating 400,000 public charging stations by 2030, with 50,000 of them being fast-charging. Advenir, a French government program dedicated to electric vehicle charging infrastructure, recently announced an additional €200 million in funding to expand charging stations across the country.

Christelle Vives, director of Izivia, said that the charging stations will be powered by green energy (wind, solar and hydroelectric) to ensure the minimum amount of CO2. “During the 12-year partnership between Izivia and McDonald's, the fast-charging stations will provide an estimated 9.4 billion kilometers worth of power, saving 1.7 million tons of CO2,” she added.
Carrefour, a French supermarket chain, also plans to install 5,000 points by 2025, offering free electricity to loyalty card holders for the first few hours with 22 kW, enough to charge a Renault Zoe.
McDonald's has similar plans in place in Italy, Sweden and the UK, targeting 10,000 chargers by 2030 in a deal with Instavolt.
