iPhone: How to use the Screen Distance feature?

One of the most interesting and useful features that iOS 17 brought is the Screen Distance feature. Screen Distance in Screen Time uses the TrueDepth camera to encourage users to move the device from their eyes away if it detects that they are holding the iPhone too close to their face for an extended period of time.

What should you know about Screen Distance?

  • The feature is only available on iPhone and iPad with Face ID.
  • The TrueDepth camera is used to measure the distance between the eyes and the screen .
  • The feature is not enabled by default. You must enable it manually by going to the Settings.

How to enable and use the Screen Distance feature?

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad .
  • Tap on Screen Time.
  • Scroll down and tap Screen Distance.
  • Tap Turn On Screen Distance.
  • Turn on the Screen Distance switch.

After you enable the feature, a notification will appear saying “iPhone is too close” whenever you hold device too close to your eyes for an extended period of time. You can tap the Continue to get rid of the notification and move your device away from your face.

iPhone: How to use the Screen Distance feature?

You can, if you want, disable the feature at any time by going to Settings > Screen Time > Screen Distance. There, you can turn the feature off.

However, the Screen Distance feature on the iPhone is very useful, since prolonged exposure to the screen can have negative effects on the eyes. Possible risks and effects include eye fatigue , dryness and a burning sensation . Also, prolonged exposure to the screen can lead to an increased risk of developing myopia , especially in children and adolescents.

People who spend long hours in front of screens are at greater risk of developing symptoms such as headaches, difficulty focusing, increased sensitivity to light, and vision problems. In addition, prolonged screen can interfere with sleep.
